Aston Business School, Aston University

Aston Business School, located in the heart of Birmingham, is one of the most experienced providers of business and management education in the UK. Today, it is among the largest leading business schools in Europe, with over 100 full-time academic staff and 2,500 undergraduate, postgraduate, MBA and management development students.

Aston can boast accreditation from AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB, one of only a small number of schools in the world to hold all three. Aston was also recently awarded a RAE score of 5 and a maximum QAA teaching assessment of 24 out of 24. The Aston MBA has been strongly ranked in the Economist (EIU) over many years and the Financial Times Executive MBA Rankings.

The Aston MBA is a world-class qualification designed for experienced managers from a wide variety of backgrounds and professions. The quality of the Aston MBA rests on the excellence of the teaching and research, and the very strong links with employers. All MBA modules feature corporate connections and an international dimension.

Aston has links with some of the world’s leading centres of business education including; HEC Montreal, Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School, Copenhagen Business School, EM Lyon, University of Mannheim, ESCP-EAP, EDHEC, The University of Florida, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. These links include reciprocal study visits, and exchanges of teaching staff and students.

The Aston MBA can be studied either full or part time, by on-campus attendance or by Aston’s unique DVD based distance learning method (DVD method available to European based students only).

The full time MBA starts in September each year with a  two week induction programme designed to enable students to adjust to the challenges ahead and hit the ground running. A dedicated MBA careers advisor is on hand throughout students’ time at Aston to enable them to make the most of the job market armed with an Aston MBA.

The part time / distance learning MBA allows students to decide how many modules to study each term and whether to study for one day per week, two evenings per week, or off-campus using DVD based modules. This study route is highly flexible and can be tailored to students’ particular needs.

The Aston MBA Programme has the same syllabus for all modes of study. Students follow 12 taught modules, ten of which are compulsory. Two elective modules are then chosen which include all the major areas of interest. At this stage of the MBA, students can tailor their studies to meet their own particular interests and personal development needs. Students are also able to specialise their MBA:

  • MBA e-Business
  • MBA Finance
  • MBA International Business
  • MBA Managing Public Services
  • MBA Marketing
  • MBA Organisational Studies – HRM
  • MBA Strategic Management

On completion of the taught part of the programme students proceed to a ‘live’ business Project, already equipped with all the skills needed to accomplish this after attending regular Project Workshops throughout their time at Aston.

Aston’s graduates can be found working in senior management positions around the world. For banking executives in Hong Kong, industrialists in India and company presidents in the USA - not to mention hundreds of senior managers in the UK - the Aston MBA has been the key that has helped open the door to employment opportunities and career success.

Student Profile

Hanae Kurokawa Country of origin: Japan Age: 36 years Position: Human Resource Manager, General Electric, Japan

“What impressed me most about the Aston MBA was the diversity of nationalities, gender and ages amongst the student body. While many full-time MBAs in the UK accept more Asian and young students, Aston assures diversity and support to create synergies in culturally diverse groups. In fact, the experiences through syndicate group work benefited me greatly in my current job at General Electric.

“The high rankings and excellent reputation of the Aston MBA was also an important factor to me.
