Brisbane Graduate School of Business, Queensland University of Technology

QUT’s Brisbane Graduate School of Business (BGSB) is home to ‘Australia’s Innovative MBA’ and provides well structured courses to help prepare you with the management skills needed to contribute effectively at senior levels.

World Class MBA

BGSB has officially moved into the top echelon of Australian MBA programs by becoming the first in Australia, and one of only a few globally, to earn all three international accreditation symbols of excellence - AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS.

QUT’s MBA was the first Queensland MBA to be ranked in the Financial Times Global Top 100 programs in 2004, one of only three in Australia to have made the list. In 2005, it was ranked as a top tier Australian MBA program by Australian Financial review’s BOSS magazine.

Australia’s Innovative MBA

The innovative structure and
curriculum of the MBA program is unique in Australia and allows students greater choice and flexibility when designing their course. Each MBA unit is conducted over a seven week teaching period. There are six teaching periods a year (two per semester), and six entry points each year. Students may choose to have time off over the summer, or take a break for a teaching period or two depending on their workload.

• 17 subject areas in the core that are essential to employers. How do we know - we asked them!
• Half-semester core and elective units which allows coverage of more core areas and sampling of elective subject areas.
• An MBA with minors, concentrations, and majors.

By undertaking the shorter, sharper units, our students cover a wider range of core units and have a greater choice of electives, giving them more depth than a standard MBA and a distinct career advantage.

Entrepreneurial Expertise

We are renowned for our Entrepreneurship program. We have offered Australia’s first and most comprehensive MBA concentration and major since 1998, and have one of the largest list of entrepreneurship offerings in the country, if not internationally. But the fact that we include entrepreneurship and new venture planning in the core units indicates something more - that we regard entrepreneurship as a necessary item in the toolkit of the modern business decision maker.

Career Progression

Finally, our graduates make an impact. Our Financial Times ranking saw use listed no. 8 in the world for Career Progression and our average graduate salary increase was 165% after completing the MBA.

MARISA VECCHIO is Chief Executive Officer of Australian   General Practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL) and its subsidiary company Quality in Practice (QIP). Marisa has been with AGPAL since 1998 as National Accreditation Manager following five years at the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP). Marisa’s keen interest in health quality is enhanced by previous management positions in the Agency for Aged Care Standards and Accreditation and was fostered following university through time spent in the post-graduate medical unit at Cambridge University.

Reasons for choosing QUT was keen to pursue my MBA at a university which offered face-to-face contact with other management executives, wherein our experiences could be shared and used as a basis for practical application. I found the MBA’s flexible structure beneficial when work commitments took me away from lectures and allowed me to fulfil my study and professional obligations with due regard for both. QUT is also conveniently located within the Brisbane CBD.

The QUT Experience

QUT offered a great ‘real world’ experience and many of the contacts I made have provided ongoing networking and friendship. As a member of the 1% club, I came to also enjoy the added benefits of the focus this provided on academic excellence.

Benefits from the Course

I found QUT offered a mix of “real” theory and “real” world - and, in essence, that is the reality of business today. Since completing my MBA, I have been appointed CEO of the company I have worked in since its inception. I now feel more confident in developing my management expertise using the foundations I learnt throughout my MBA.
