Rice University, Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management

Rice University‚s Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management is at the forefront of business education. We surveyed CEOs about what they find lacking in the MBA grads they hire. They said leadership and communications skills. We listened and our action learning curriculum is the result.

While many business schools continue to emphasize theory, Rice’s unique program requires every student to take their classroom knowledge into a real business setting, developing crucial leadership and managerial skills. In the Jones School‚s Action Learning Project (ALP), completed during the second semester of the first year, student teams consult with a company to solve a specific problem that the company is currently facing. The entrepreneurship electives and numerous experiential-learning-based electives provide additional opportunities for students to use their theoretical knowledge to address real business needs.

It's no surprise to us that our graduates are much sought after. The Jones School ranks amongst the top U.S. schools in many categories: women faculty, faculty with doctorates, women students, salary today, value for money, alumni recommendation, international faculty and placement success.

Students have an unparalleled opportunity to work one-on-one with an accessible, involved, and energetic faculty. The faculty maintains an important balance between teaching and research, believing that current industry knowledge is as critical as textbooks. All of the school‚s instructors are either academics with significant business or consulting experience, or business executives with significant classroom experience who teach specialized elective courses. Faculty members are recognized as leaders in their fields and in teaching one was named one of the nation‚s two best entrepreneurial instructors by Business Week.

Parker Meeks Rice MBA Class of 2005

Business school encourages creative thinking, not one specific right answer. You also get the benefit of listening to fifty-nine other people who have different backgrounds, think differently, and come up with solutions that I would never have considered. Exposure to this environment has enriched the way in which I attack issues and has enlightened me to different approaches that I can apply in future situations.

I’d say just the general attitude is the best thing about the Jones School - how open everyone is to helping all the students. One of my best experiences was in accounting, but two CPAs in my class spent as much time as I needed to make sure I understood the concepts.

You don’t really understand how great a school is until you come meet the students, and this is especially true of Rice. Once I met with students and faculty, I understood how motivated the people here are to make sure your experience is the best it can be - and it has turned out to be much better than I hoped.
