"If you want your application to business school to stand out, first do your homework properly, and then apply early"

By: Brooke Hardwick, Associate Director of Admissions at IESE Business School

Our decision-making process for MBA applicants is not based solely on the excellence of candidates; diversity is important to us, and we work hard to make sure that we get the balance we want on our courses.

MBA application

While there is no "ideal" candidate, there are certainly a number of points that we bear in mind when we assess an application. Given the financial and professional commitment involved in taking an MBA, we need to see that candidates have done their homework and are fully informed about IESE, and what they want from the school. Before making an application, applicants must know what the academic, professional, and personal requirements are, and whether they can meet them.

The first step is to take the time to explore our website.

To improve the application process, and allow us to find out more about candidates, we have now introduced a Feedback on your profile that allows us to make a preliminary evaluation on applicants profile. We have found this very efficient, and it can save everybody a lot of time. It is available via the website (www.mba.iese.edu) and should be accompanied by GMAT scores and other entry requirements.

The website has information on the schools open days and evening events around the world where, in an informal atmosphere, would-be candidates can talk to teachers and students.

I cannot over-emphasize the importance of beginning the application process as early as possible.

Although this is no guarantee of a place, historically, our strongest candidates have been those that placed an application by the end of the year preceding the start of the course. We then have a further three rolling deadlines right up until April 28th. But candidates should bear in mind that we still continue to receive huge numbers of applications in the week before that final deadline, and standing out among the crowd is difficult.

It is also worth pointing out that a well-prepared dossier, neatly laid out and easily accessible, speaks volumes about the seriousness of a candidate.

Students applying to European business schools should bear in mind that, unlike their US competitors, there are few scholarships and bursaries available, and at best, offer only a proportion of tuition fees. In the case of IESE, we tend to favor applicants from the developing world when it comes to awarding scholarships.  Our website has more information on these, as well as financing options available in a number of countries.

In short, the goal of a serious business school is to launch peoples careers. What we are looking for are serious professionals with a vision of where they want to go. Take advantage of every opportunity a business school offers to find out as much as possible, and thus limit your applications to the select few that meet your criteria. And dont worry about being seen to be shopping around. Let schools know that you have seen others: just be clear and open on the reasons for making your final decision.
