Helping Businesses Win the War for Talent Worldwide
The rapid globalisation of world markets has dramatically changed the hunt for talent. Look at the office locations of major headhunting firm Egon Zehnder, with international offices in 20 countries worldwide in cities such as Bogota, Bratislava, Jeddah, Kuala Lumpur, alongside all the usual suspects like New York, London, and Tokyo. Russell Reynolds has 35 offices in places like New Delhi, Copenhagen, and Dallas. Not only are the offices international, the recruitment consultants who work in them are increasingly looking for international pools of talent to match the key skills and experience requested by employers.
Increasingly, employers are keen to find local talent that has been educated or trained abroad. This combines the best of both worlds: local knowledge with global scope. A team from McKinsey & Company conducted a year-long study of 77 companies and nearly 6,000 managers to uncover the most important corporate resource (and key to corporate success) over the next two decades. What did they discover? Talent is the key: smart, nimble, cosmopolitan, globally minded business managers. Ed Michaels, Director of McKinsey & Co in Atlanta, reports, “In 15 years, there will be 15% fewer Americans in the 35-45-year-old range than there are now. So over that period, the demand for bright, talented 35- 45-year-olds will increase by, say, 25%, and the supply will be going down by 15%. This sets the stage for a talent war.” The challenge is not about finding someone to fill a role, but finding the right person, especially if a company based in the USA is looking to hire someone who has been educated and/or worked in Europe. What’s more, this ‘scarcity ‘of talent means companies often have to look beyond their backyard to find the people they want to hire. As a result, more and more companies are taking non-traditional approaches to hiring.
As an MBA, you will be qualified to apply for many exciting positions that are available on the QS TopMBA Careers site. Similarly, recruiters at high-profile firms may find they get hundreds of applications for any given position. For the candidate, the “needle” is that great job offer (that can get lost in the sea of opportunities) and for the recruiter, the “needle” is the right person for a particular job. The hiring process is a courtship, with both sides presenting their best sides, and yet trying to figure out whether they are actually suited for one another. Shawn Graham of the University of North Carolina draws an analogy with the ‘dating experience’. You may have to meet a lot of Mr or Ms Wrongs before you find a Mr or Ms Right. It’s all about relationships:
Know your type – When searching for a job, how important is prestige (looks), culture (personality) and job content (intellect)?
Play the field – Proactive vs reactive – Would you/did you wait for your soul mate to fall into your lap?
Go for the ‘good-night kiss’ – reaffirm your interest in a position (dating equivalent of “call me”) and ask about next steps (“will I see you again?”).
