Student profile

Gareth McIndoe
Full-Time MBA (graduated 2009)

I had been considering postgraduate study for 18 months before enrolling full time on the MBA programme. The idea originally came from a work colleague, and given that Durham was relatively local and held in high regard, I took the plunge and applied for a place through Durham's scholarship programme.

Prior to studying for the MBA I had built up nine years of work experience: this included seven years as an infantry officer in the British Army and two years exposure to business management within an educational charity. I think this experience was important because as the MBA went on I found myself using new skills and knowledge to re-appraise earlier decisions and come up with new solutions and ideas.

The MBA left me with three broad memories. Firstly, I felt extremely happy that academic rigour was skilfully tailored to match real world business requirements. The exacting Boardroom actvity, which demands real strategic and financial insight, is hard proof of this. Secondly, Durham offers all students the option to conduct real business projects instead of academic dissertations. I took up this option and used it to establish a network of contacts in the industry which I was targeting post-MBA. Finally, I was particularly impressed with Durham's expansive network of contacts in the local, national and international business community. This, perhaps above all other features, is what I will remember the course for. The London City Tour and International Study Experience are two examples of how Durham Business School puts their MBA students into new networks which lead to job offers.

For me the MBA has been a resounding success because it has led to a great job offer which I have accepted. It has enabled me to move my career in the direction I want to go and has given me skills, contacts and knowledge which I will draw on for the rest of my career. I highly recommend it.
