Overview
Founded in 1923, the Oregon M.B.A. program belongs to the elite of AACSB-accredited West Coast M.B.A. programs. We’re proud to be an integral part of the Lundquist College of Business at the University of Oregon, the state’s flagship liberal arts institution and a member of the A.A.U., the prestigious association of the 62 leading research universities in the U.S. and Canada.
The Oregon M.B.A. combines a solid foundation of core business courses with numerous electives and myriad experiential learning opportunities focused on our four signature centers in Entrepreneurship, Securities Analysis, Sports Marketing, and Sustainable Business Practices. These centers describe what Oregon is all about: edgy, progressive, technologically sophisticated, outdoorsy, socially and environmentally responsible.
Effective leaders must possess superior strategic, analytical, and communication skills to identify opportunities and mobilize others to implement important business initiatives. The Oregon M.B.A. combines leadership training, experiential learning, and business theory in order to inculcate these skills.
All the academic business disciplines—accounting, decision sciences (information technology, operations, statistics), finance, management (entrepreneurship, organizational behavior, strategy), and marketing (consumer behavior, strategy)—are represented among our first-rate research and teaching faculty. But our goal is not to be all things to all people. That’s why we established four centers of excellence— Securities Analysis Center, the Center for Sustainable Business Practices, Lundquist Center for Entrepreneurship, and Warsaw Sports Marketing Center. Their mission is to promote interdisciplinary research, bring together researchers and practitioners from their respective industries, and create experiential learning and networking opportunities for our students. Through hands-on learning and consulting projects, company site visits, travel to industry centers on the West and East Coast, speaker series, and center- sponsored internships, you will connect with prominent alumni and others who are leaders in their industries.
Of the student body, a third is women; two thirds hold non-business bachelor’s degrees; and almost a quarter is international students. The program draws students from half the states in the Union. Tuition at the University of Oregon is one of the most reasonable in the U.S. That's why Forbes Magazine has rated us highly for return on investment.
Small entering cohorts, class sizes, and an emphasis on group work ensure that students get to know one another well and develop solid working relationships and strong friendships with each other and the faculty.
Oregon M.B.A. students come to Oregon for the same reasons that high-tech, sports-apparel, and innovative entrepreneurial companies do: its natural beauty, concern for society and the environment, relaxed outdoorsy lifestyle, and tolerance of quirky eccentricities. Oregon is not just a place; it’s a state of mind.
Student profile
JIM SEVER: A graduate of the College of William and Mary from Washington, D.C.
WHY OREGON? I viewed the Oregon M.B.A. as the best small program in the country. The individualized attention from professors and the chance to know all of my classmates were the ideal learning environment for me. Additionally, I wanted to transition from the East to the West Coast; the Oregon M.B.A. linked me to career opportunities from San Francisco to Seattle.
CURRICULAR FOCUS: Securities Analysis. As one of four centers of excellence, the SA Center is one of the ways the Oregon M.B.A. delivers on its mission of experiential education. Not only is the curriculum strong and balanced, but the chance to work on consulting projects and network with players in the financial services industry is invaluable.
NOTEWORTHY EXPERIENCES: My Strategic Planning Project gave me the opportunity to analyze, evaluate and recommend a go or no-go action on a new venture for a private equity firm. This consulting project demonstrated the challenges of working for a client and managing deliverables according to a constantly evolving timeline.
INSIDER ADVICE: Pursue a passion and share it with others. The Oregon M.B.A. offers many opportunities to make an impact, but no one is going to take the initiative for you. You will get back twice what you put in, so take the time to get involved.
POST-M.B.A.: I accepted a job as a financial analyst with Intel in Portland while continuing part-time with former classmates on a startup venture.
