Overview
The Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon is one of the world’s highest-rated graduate business degrees, owing its success to a focus on innovation throughout all aspects of its program. The hallmark of our MBA degree is an analytic approach to global business management. Founded in 1949, Carnegie Mellon is the pioneer of quantitative problem solving, with a reputation for creating new ways to transfer knowledge. The school’s heritage includes seven Nobel laureates whose academic careers began at Carnegie Mellon. Our groundbreaking research, particularly in corporate finance, global macroeconomics and operations, continues to serve as the basis for many business and academic models.
The MBA program features an interdisciplinary approach to business management. Students do not simply learn by absorbing information – they actively experience the challenge of participating in business operations. Through coursework and dynamic academic exercises, student teams direct challenging business issues within a fast-paced environment. The program revolves around our renowned mini-semester model, exposing students to a wide range of courses. Upon graduation, students will have completed 32 courses, half of which are electives customized to students’ needs.
Your MBA Is Serious Business
Our philosophy embraces a rigorous academic experience. In year one, the program emphasizes a foundation of introductory and functional knowledge. Additionally, students gain a solid understanding of core business principles, including operations management, finance, marketing, organizational behavior and accounting. Year one culminates in an optional internship program coordinated by our Career Opportunities Center.
In year two, the focus is the integration of various functional, contemporary business arenas. Among the unique experiences is the program’s capstone course, Management Game, an applied strategic management exercise in which teams act as senior management of companies for three simulated years.
Tracks As Our Advantage
Take one of the world’s most technology-savvy universities, leverage its strengths, and merge them to the world of business – what is the result? The Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon, where the collaborative space between business and technology is the focus of our teaching and research.
We offer a cross-campus curriculum that fulfills students’ desire to extend their reach and academic experience beyond the walls of the business school. Our standard of integration is higher. Rather than simply offer classroom visits by executives or faculty, we immerse students in schools outside the MBA program to learn from academic experts who lead many of the world’s top-ranked research centers. We believe this difference is a key distinction among today’s MBA programs.

Student profile
Successful Tepper candidates come from a wide variety of backgrounds and profiles. We encourage interested candidates to focus on the range, rather than the mean when reviewing class profile factors and considering whether or not they should apply. For example, half of our students have GMAT scores below the average, and although most students have between 2 and 8 years of professional experience, there are several that joined Tepper directly after their undergraduate study or that have more than 8 years of experience. We are seeking candidates from all academic disciplines, and in a typical year, half of our students come from non-technical backgrounds. You simply don't need to be an engineer to achieve great things at Tepper. We have many students currently studying at Tepper who were initially concerned about their chance of being admitted, that have been successful---and with many receiving merit scholarships. The only sure-thing in the admission process is that you can't get in if you don't apply!
