Overview

Outstanding faculty and students at the University of Michigan's Stephen M. Ross School of Business come together in an innovative learning community that is consistently ranked among the world leaders in both research and teaching. In 2008, the Ross School will open a new, state-of-the-art facility that will support the school's commitment to delivering a transformational educational experience.

The Ross difference is action-based learning. We are committed to an approach to business education that goes beyond studying cases. We create a series of experiences designed to draw MBA students into scenarios that will develop and test their leadership capabilities in real time. We build a foundation of the most rigorous analytical tools and quantitative skills. Then we work hard to create challenging opportunities for students to apply those skills and develop new ones in team-based multidisciplinary projects. Students work with peers and faculty in real time for real stakes for real companies in locations around the world. They do it as part of our MBA core curriculum, and they can choose to do even more through a rich array of electives and focused learning opportunities.

In addition to world-class academic departments in all of the core business disciplines, the Ross School houses many research institutes and centers that provide thought leadership and unsurpassed learning opportunities in focused areas of interest.
The Frederick and Barbara Erb Institute, a partnership between Ross and the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment, offers the world’s leading dual degree program (MBA/MS) focused on global sustainable enterprise. The Nonprofit and Public Management Center, a partnership with the schools of Public Policy and Social Work, is dedicated to providing managerial expertise to the dynamic intersection among public, private and nonprofit institutions. The Ross School shares many resources with the William Davidson Institute, which has a mission to facilitate economic transition in developing countries.

Our goal is to provide an educational experience that is not just first-rate, but transformational. We want you to leave with broader aspirations, the confidence to pursue them, and the tools to achieve them.

Student profile

The Ross approach is innovative. But it's not always neat or easy. Action-based learning requires a great deal of open-mindedness, agility, and teamwork to succeed. At Ross, we actively foster these qualities in our community. We look for students who are willing and eager to be part of something larger than themselves, who are receptive to new ways of thinking, and who bring all their experiences to bear on how they tackle a challenge.

More than a third of Ross full-time MBA students come from outside the U.S. The average age of the class of 2008 is 28. Nineteen percent majored in business as undergraduates; 27% majored in the liberal arts & sciences. Some have worked in finance, others in consulting. Some have been professional hockey players, others have lived on submarines. What they have in common is significant work or leadership experience and a commitment to stretching themselves.
