Overview
The mission of the Yale School of Management is to educate leaders for business and society. This mission reflects the vision and expectation that our graduates are inspiring leaders who own and solve hard problems that matter.
The Yale School of Management has always been an innovator in the training of professional managers. The school’s integrated MBA curriculum, launched in 2006, adapts that spirit of innovation to the current business landscape. Yale SOM’s core curriculum replaces many traditional subjects, such as finance and marketing, with multi-disciplinary, team-taught courses, called Organizational Perspectives, that teach students to draw on the information, tools, and skills necessary to develop creative solutions and make strategic decisions.
The school supports this integrative approach with SOM-developed teaching materials that incorporate the actual resources and information a contemporary manager must draw on every day; for instance, the school’s online “raw” case format utilizes documents such as 10-Ks and analyst reports, alongside other materials such as faculty-authored articles and media reports, to enable students to analyze business problems from a variety of disciplines and points of view.
Yale SOM is also one of the first major MBA programs to require study abroad, taking first-year students on a two-week International Experience trip to locations around the world, where they interact with business, cultural, NGO, and political leaders and gain first-hand perspectives on the global economy. Another key dimension to the Yale SOM experience is the Leadership Development Program, which, in concert with other courses and programs, encourages students to focus and develop their personal and professional aspirations, and to align those aspirations with their values and commitments.
Students delve into subjects of professional interest by taking SOM elective courses. The school’s low faculty-student ratio allows for small class sizes and close faculty engagement. Yale SOM is distinct among business schools in its close integration with the rest of the university, enabling our MBA students to take a wide variety of elective courses for MBA program credit in departments throughout the university or to pursue joint degree programs with seven of Yale’s other professional schools or with departments in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
Yale SOM offers a two-year full-time MBA degree, along with a PhD program, executive educa¬tion, and an MBA for Executives program tailored for healthcare professionals. With around 200 students in each full-time MBA program class, the school is supportive and tight-knit. Our students come from backgrounds in every sector and from countries around the world. Our alumni lead organizations as distinct as PepsiCo, Morgan Stanley Investment Bank, the U.S. General Services Administration, and Mercy Corps.
Admission
The School of Management seeks individuals from a variety of academic, cultural, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds. Successful candidates exhibit strong career aspirations, leadership ability, academic achievement, passion, and initiative.
Admission decisions are made on the basis of GMAT scores, academic record, work experience, extracurricular activities, essays, and two letters of recommendation, all of which are part of the online application. Any interview, if subsequently requested, is also part of the application process. There are three application periods from October to March.
A few exceptional students may be admitted directly from their undergraduate program. However, most admitted applicants have demonstrated their leadership, managerial, and entrepreneurial inclinations through professional experience.
Financial Aid
Yale SOM offers a variety of merit-based scholarships and SOM students have attained scholarship support from various outside sources. The Financial Aid Office also helps students secure appropriate student loans. The school’s generous loan forgiveness program
