Full Time MBA Overview

Through its motto of “real world, real learning” and focus on relevance, the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) full-time MBA caters to a select group of 90 experienced, mature, and globally minded individuals. It offers a real-life, solid education with direct applicability and impact though opportunities to work directly with companies and start-ups. With students from 44 nationalities, and a regularly updated faculty (the institute does not offer tenure) of 60 professors representing 23 nationalities, IMD delivers intensive training and preparation for global business leaders.

The average age at entry to the program is 31 and students will typically have around seven years of experience. IMD have a number of basic requirements for admission including a bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited institution, at least one language in addition to English and a minimum of three years full-time work experience. Applicants must be at least 25 years old and while the minimum GMAT score required is 600, it is worth keeping in mind that 80% of applicants score between 620 and 750.

The IMD full-time MBA is a selective and transformational general management program over one year, where participants develop leadership skills based on technical competence, self-awareness, and moral judgment.

The program joins intensive building blocks and integrative projects with personalized studies and opportunity for reflection. The personal and leadership development stream builds the ability to assess, navigate, and shape organizational contexts, increasing self-awareness and the ability to inspire group performance. Optional sessions with a trained psychoanalyst offer a further opportunity to become a more effective leader, ready to assertively shape the future.

Several trips – including a Europe trip; a discovery expedition, with one week in a developed country and one week in a developing country; and a trip to reflect on a dilemma – are a key feature of the IMD MBA program. Students also have an opportunity to participate in an International Consulting Project, where they will work as a consultant on a project designed by various companies.

Both during the MBA program and after graduation, IMD’s extensive alumni network, spread over 140 countries, provides an invaluable source of information about a broad range of industries, roles, and hidden opportunities. It regularly hosts ‘discovery events’ to bring alumni and faculty together to discuss the school’s latest research findings.

IMD trains 8,000 executives each year, with over 70% of alumni in upper-management positions, and at board and/or committee level. Post-graduation, 79% of students are employed within three months, with an average salary of US$156,648, representing an increase of 81%.
