MBA Full Time Overview

Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business is an institution on the rise. While the school’s full-time MBA program ranks highly, the school does not actively chase rankings. Instead, the school focuses on small class sizes and an intimate learning experience, focusing on developing entrepreneurs, whether they go on to be business founders or employees with an entrepreneurial mindset. This dedication happens to have impressed rankings compliers, but, as the school itself says: “We’re grateful for the national recognition, but mostly because we care about those who care about the rankings: students, alumni and the companies who hire our graduates.” In keeping with this student-focused mentality, Jones makes the application process as simple as possible. Applicants for the Jones full-time MBA must submit university transcripts, GMAT/GRE scores, a professional CV, one professional recommendation from a current direct supervisor, responses to two essay questions, and a US$200 application fee. If necessary, shortlisted candidates might then be invited to an interview, either on campus or online (for students not based in Jones’ hometown of Houston, Texas). Tuition fees are currently US$55,500 per year, and a wide range of scholarships is available, including academic merit scholarships and scholarships for military veterans. Like most MBA programs, the Jones full-time MBA begins with a variety of core classes. However, unlike most, these courses are selected with transition in mind – they’re aimed at helping students make the leap from study to modern, cutting-edge practice, with data analysis, ethics and organizational behavior theory all covered. In the second year, students can pick from over 100 electives in order to specialize to suit their career objectives, or continue with a general program in order to keep their options open. There’s also a global immersion project, in which students spend seven to ten days abroad, working on a real-life consulting project for a business. Projects are allocated based on each student’s subject concentration, e.g. finance or marketing. It goes without saying that this thorough, intense business training leaves students eminently prepared for life in the real business world. As proof of this, 86% of the most recent Jones MBA graduating class received job offers within three months of graduation, with 70% of accepted offers facilitated through the university (for example, through internships or via the global immersion project). What’s more, the average base salary for the graduating class was US$112,158, with an average sign-on bonus of US$25,475 - impressive figures, even for the US, where salaries tend to exceed those paid in Asia and Europe.
