The Yale School of Management (SOM) is the graduate business school of Yale University, a top US Ivy League university located in New Haven, Connecticut, US.

The Yale MBA is offered as a full-time residential program completed over two years. In both the first and second years of the full-time MBA program, students take electives either through the school or other departments of the school, with an emphasis on cross-disciplinary study. In addition, Yale offers a part-time, 22-month MBA for executives and a one-year master’s in advanced management. Yale SOM also offers dual-degree options through other departments in the university.

As part of Yale’s unique integrated MBA curriculum, students study ‘raw’ cases, which involve sifting through and analyzing a range of materials such as stock charts and data, as opposed to standard business case studies presented as a single-point issue. The goal of this approach is to enable students to utilize lateral thinking when approaching a problem, as well as to excel in fast-moving and complex global organizations. Yale SOM also develops cases in collaboration with other Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM) partner schools abroad, with study exchange integral to the program’s ongoing development.

The full-time MBA curriculum also includes a leadership development program and a global studies requirement. The latter typically involves an international experience course, in which students take a 10-day trip overseas to learn about the global economy, doing an online global network course (a virtual collaborative classroom shared with other students in which a business problem is cross-examined), or a week-long course at a partner GNAM school. Additional study abroad opportunities are available with international business schools including LSE in London, England, and the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management in Beijing.

Yale SOM MBA students have options for involvement in several of the university’s academic centers, including the International Center for Finance, the Center for Business and the Environment, and the Center for Customer Insights, as well as clubs ranging from career and professional development-focused clubs to sports teams and community service organizations. Yale encourages students to work in the nonprofit and public sectors, with a dedicated internship fund for those interning in these sectors and a loan forgiveness fund available to support alumni who work in them.

As the business school of a top US Ivy League university, Yale SOM is one of the toughest to get into, with acceptance rates between 17 and 23.7%. There is a large and highly diverse entering class of 323 students, with 43% female and 46% international. Post-graduation, 90% of students are employed within three months. The class of 2016 has an average salary of US$120,000 (plus an additional signing bonus of US$25,000). Top employers in recent years have included Deloitte, Google and Boston Consulting Group; most work in consulting (45%) or finance (23%).
