Redefining business education: An MBA focused on adaptability and resilience

Kiki Wang, UBC Sauder MBA alumnus from the Class of 2009, explains how much this vision resonated with her personal and professional goals.

I spend so much of my day at work that it’s important for me to feel passionate about what I do and to believe that I’m contributing to something bigger. My MBA experience reinforced this mindset, and it continues to guide the work I do today.”

Having completed her undergraduate studies in International Business Management at Shanghai International Studies University and a Master’s in Finance at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, Kiki wanted to strengthen her expertise and sharpen her professional skills.

“The Business Career Centre was an invaluable resource, especially as an international student navigating a new business culture in Canada,” said Kiki. "They provided tailored advice, training, and tools to help me learn about the communication protocol in Canada. In fact, I still use the resume template I received from the BCC to this day.”

In addition to the BCC’s career resources, Kiki has built her network in both Vancouver and Hong Kong through UBC Sauder’s expansive and highly engaged global alumni community of over 50,000 alumni in 100 countries.

An Executive-level student at business school

Healthcare industries across the world are facing growing pressure, not just from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, but also from changing demographics, the increase in non-communicable diseases like cancers, heart attacks and diabetes, and growing workforce challenges.

That’s according to Professor Nora Ann Colton, Director of the University College London (UCL) Global Business School for Health; the first business school in the world dedicated to reimagining global healthcare management.

Professor Colton has observed a collective realisation in the healthcare industry that training more clinical staff and adding new technology will not solve the challenges.

She said: “The industry needs courageous leaders who think and act differently. Business education at the executive level offers bursts of learning with a case-study approach that can empower healthcare leaders to bring their learning back into their organisations to make the needed changes.”

The UCL Global Business School for Health (GBSH) offers an Executive MBA Health programme and shorter residential courses, with the purpose of empowering tomorrow’s healthcare leaders who can make a real difference to the health of the population.

It’s not just UCL that’s creating dedicated healthcare leaders. Both Aalto University School of Business and the University of Cologne deliver executive education courses for managers within the healthcare sector too.

Upskilling the industry for organisational transformation

Maria Karsten is the Associate Director for Open Enrolment Programmes at Aalto University Executive Education Ltd, where healthcare leaders have been trained for 30 years.

When asked why executive education graduates are so valuable within the healthcare field, she said: “At least in Finland, most leaders and supervisors in healthcare are trained physicians or nurses and their education doesn’t typically include advanced-level leadership and business management.

“Many feel they need to develop and update their leadership skills and decision-making capabilities within their organisations. Our Aalto Health Executive MBA programme focuses on strategy, leadership, finance and marketing with a special emphasis on strategy and leadership in a global context, thus answering their educational needs.”

At the heart of the Aalto Executive MBA is transformation. The programme is designed to enhance students’ skills and competencies as both leaders and as individuals.

Maria said: “The modules strengthen participants’ strategic thinking, increasing their understanding of why businesses need to transform and how they themselves can become drivers of organisational transformation. These all are skills and competencies that are needed in modern and successful healthcare organisations.

Aalto also provides a Healthcare Management Education programme, titled The Johtaminen Terveydenhuollosa Programme, which acts as a pathway to the Aalto Health MBA or the Health Executive MBA. The programme is designed for industry leaders, managers, experts and decision-makers and provides the tools for addressing current healthcare challenges through a range of management skills.

Creating programmes that respond to a complex healthcare environment

Professor Ludwig Kuntz, from the Department of Business Administration and Health Care Management at the University of Cologne, agrees that the innovative leadership skills required for transforming the healthcare industry are not always taught in medical school.

He said: “The industry is facing new technological and organisational challenges in an increasingly complex environment. The requirements for managers within the healthcare industry are increasing. The Healthcare Management Certificate Programme of the Business School of the University of Cologne offers ideal conditions for developing the necessary skills.”

While not an Executive MBA, the certificate gives students executive-level business management skills as it focuses on the application of management methods, analysis and optimisation of processes, knowledge of quality management systems, structure and control of healthcare systems and leadership methods for motivation, management and human resources development.

“The Healthcare Management certificate programme is aimed at physicians in hospitals, clinics and other healthcare organisations who are responsible for management tasks. It is also aimed at physicians in out-patient care and physician associations who wish to improve their practice management,” said Professor Kuntz.

Specialised business education for industry-ready leaders

At the UCL Global Business School for Health, Professor Colton feels that there is often an assumption in business schools that all industries require the same business knowledge from students. “However,” she said, “health systems are complex and often reflective of societal values and cultures which make the need for contextualised learning within the industry very important.

“There is also the need to cover health systems in terms of patients, care teams, organisations and environment – whether public or private, or national or global – so that students understand how to integrate and co-produce better healthcare from several angles.”

The Executive MBA at UCL’s GBSH is taught by both health and business professionals, which Professor Colton said “is integral in ensuring students understanding how to apply business and management learning to the health and healthcare sector.

“We also have a Health Executives in Residence programme, designed to give students the opportunity to be mentored and counselled by health professionals who have been or are senior level managers and leaders in the healthcare sector.

“These skills are needed as the health eco-system expands to be much more interdisciplinary and systemic for addressing the challenges the sector faces.”

TopMBA caught up with faculty and staff at top-ranked business schools in the latest QS Global Executive MBA Rankings 2021 to learn more about why flexible EMBAs are on the rise and why professionals should take advantage of this trend.

Are EMBA programmes still relevant today?

Arve Utseth, Associate Director of International Executive Programmes at IESE Business School, believes that the format of EMBA programmes positions them as extremely relevant degrees in the business higher education sector.

He said: “The offering of postgraduate executive learning propositions has grown exponentially over the last years, and today working professionals can choose amongst an array of shorter and longer courses, both online, blended, and face-to-face.

“EMBA programmes still remain very relevant and important in that they cover a learning purpose not covered by other executive education programmes.”

These sentiments are echoed by Rachel Maguer, Global Director of Marketing and Recruitment at INSEAD.

She said: “EMBA programmes are very much in demand for executives across the globe. Executives are facing a fast-changing professional environment with new challenges and are continuing to look to business schools to provide them with the skills and also an engaged network to support their growth as leaders.”

Managers need to prepare themselves to manage uncertainty, and this will come through programmes like EMBAs, which provide you with the knowledge, competencies and skills to manage your business and lead your teams amidst unpredictability.”

The importance of flexibility and blended learning

Several business schools in both the global and regional top 10s in the QS Global EMBA Rankings 2021 attributed the success of their programmes to flexible formats and technology.

Gafo said: “We [IE] believe that blended formats for delivery will become mainstream. All programmes should incorporate online learning and experiences and offer the best from the online and physical worlds.”

Faculty and recruiters from INSEAD, IESE and Warwick Business School agree with Gafo.

Maguer said: “INSEAD was already leveraging technology to deliver some online content and facilitate interactions around the world to bring our community together online.

“We have really taken this to the next level this year, bringing VR and AR solutions into our teaching environment. We have made significant investments to ensure that our facilities provide an exceptional dual learning experience for those on campus and peers joining from their homes and that online delivery is not just a retransmission of what would have been planned on-campus.”

Hossam Zeitoun, course director for WBS’ Distance Learning programmes, said: “With the easing of [COVID-19] restrictions we are now back to face-to-face modules, although it is blended so we can deliver to students on campus under COVID safety measures and those studying online at the same time.

“Lectures will be face-to-face for those on campus but also beamed on the my.wbs platform for those studying online, and that will be the same for seminars, while all students will have further material on the my.wbs platform to complete in their own time.

“Lecturers have been given extra training and a rich online resource has been set up to support them in making the transition from face-to-face teaching to blended teaching. It is packed with guides and videos and provides tips on engaging with students while a module is running, as well as information on training and support that is available to help them.”

With a six-figure price tag, going to business school is undoubtedly an investment, one that many MBA candidates hope will help them advance in their career.

This is even more the case for an EMBA programme, the business degree aimed at transforming mid-to-senior professionals into executives.

This type of programme, which takes place mostly part-time over the course of one to two years, helps students increase their career opportunities by developing a high-level skillet, expanding their global network, and gaining a significant advantage in terms of salary.

The majority of EMBA graduates can expect an average graduate salary between US$300,000 and US$400,000.

Looking at the list above, it’s clear that going to business school for executive programmes can benefit professionals from all over the world – from big hubs in the Asia Pacific to European capitals and the US.

Among the programmes within this salary range, the W.P. Carey School of Business’ China EMBA course – taking place in Shanghai – leads as the one with the top graduate salary, averaging a whopping US$384,738. Other programmes located in Asia include the EMBAs from Tsinghua University, HEC Paris (China Track), Korea University Business School, Washing University Olin Business School (China Track), HKU Business School, the UCLA and NUS joint EMBA, and CUHK Business School.

The remaining schools include top performers in the QS EMBA Rankings, such as IE Business School and INSEAD.

While fewer EMBA programmes see grads earning between US$400,000 to US$500,000 compared to programmes with average graduate salaries between US$300,000 and US$400,000, professionals who aim to make above US$400,000 can count on programmes such as the EMBAs offered by TRIUM Global, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Antai College of Economics and Management and CEIBS.

Interestingly, all of these apart from TRIUM Global are offered by universities in the Asian region. This could explain the salary jump, as average salaries adapt to costs of living, which vary from country to country and continent to continent.

TRIUM Global is the only group of Western business school in this category. The EMBA programme is offered as a partnership between HEC Paris, London School of Economics and NYU Stern School of Business, blending the strengths from the three institutions to give candidates a comprehensive executive experience.

Committed to Doing an Executive MBA? Here’s What Schools Have Planned for Next Year

Here’s what top business schools that consistently rank highly in EMBA rankings have planned for upcoming cohorts.

If you’ve been looking into doing an Executive MBA (EMBA), chances are you’re ready to take the next steps to move into your senior career.

However, much like MBA programmes, every business school will take a different approach to its EMBA offerings.

Depending on your individual needs and preferences, you might choose to apply to a specific programme over the other – especially after the COVID-19 outbreak, where some programmes were moved entirely online.

Here’s what top business schools that consistently rank highly in the QS Global Executive MBA Rankings have planned for upcoming cohorts.

Europe

Saïd Business School

Saïd Business School offers applicants two yearly intakes in September and January.

The September intake is taught in one-week modules spanning over 24 months, while the January intake is taught in one-week modules over the course of 22 months. Both intakes include the same class materials and assessments, which take place at the end of each module.

The school has committed to resuming in-person teaching as soon as permitted. Each module starts on a Monday morning and ends on a Friday evening, taking place in Oxford.

INSEAD

INSEAD’s Global EMBA (GEMBA) is an intensive all-round programme that includes 12 core courses, four elective courses, three key management challenges, and a leadership programme.

You can expect to spend 60 to 65 days out of the office, depending on which electives you choose, for a total of 12 weeks of classes on campus. At INSEAD’s European campus, the programme is split into three two-week modules and one one-week module.

IESE Business School

IESE offers an EMBA programme across four different locations: Barcelona, Madrid, Munich, and Sao Paulo.

Unlike other business schools, IESE gives you the option to choose between two formats, accommodating your schedule and professional requirements:

Biweekly: This format includes six intensive weeks at the Barcelona or Madrid campus. Classes start on Friday morning and end on Saturday morning.
Weekly: This format also includes six intensive weeks, but teaching takes place from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning.

HEC Paris

HEC Paris offers its EMBA in five different part-time tracks, allowing you to select the option that most fits with your lifestyle and career. The programme includes core courses, custom courses, and a Capstone Project. About 12 percent of the EMBA is delivered online.

Depending on your chosen track, you will spend about 55 days out of the office, and you’ll be able to complete the programme in 15 or 18 months at the school’s Paris or Doha campus.

North America

MIT Sloan School of Management

The Executive MBA from MIT Sloan is a rigorous 20-month programme that’ll allow you to develop your skills within one of the world’s top business schools for innovation and leadership.

The EMBA schedule includes:

26 weekends with classes on campus delivered every two to three weeks on Fridays and Saturdays
Four one-week modules, taking place every six months
One week-long international project trip

While the MIT Sloan EMBA might seem less flexible than other programmes, it’s one of the shortest in North America, allowing you to upskill fast.

The Wharton School

The Wharton EMBA takes place on the school’s campuses in both Philadelphia and San Francisco, allowing you to get a feel for how business is done on both coasts.

The programme takes two years to complete – with three terms per year – and includes:

An initial week-long meeting in Philadelphia to immerse yourself in classes and network with your classmates
Classes on Friday and Saturday, every other week, with some additional three-day weekends
A Global Business Week abroad in September in your second year

Booth School of Business

The Booth EMBA is delivered at the Chicago, London, and Hong Kong campuses. Regardless of which one you choose, the programme takes 21 months to complete and starts in August.

The programme’s structure includes:

Two to three courses per quarter, with a total of 18 in the core curriculum
Week-long international session weeks, depending on location

If you decide to undertake your EMBA at the Chicago campus, it will feature:

16 weeks of in-person teaching over 21 months, from Monday morning to Saturday afternoon
Three international session weeks

To specialize or not to specialize, that’s the question. When you ask career advisors what they think about job specialization, chances are you’ll get a variety of responses and no clear consensus. The same is true when it comes to specializing in your Executive MBA studies.

Specialization offers obvious benefits such as becoming an expert in a chosen field, commanding a higher pay scale and focusing more time on perfecting your chosen skill as opposed to learning a bit about everything.

Yet, you’ll also hear warnings that specialization cuts you off from a wider range of opportunities, makes you less marketable to other sectors, and keeps you from learning about the bigger picture of business.

The question of whether an EMBA specialization is a good idea becomes much less debated when the focus is on an industry going strong and shows clear signs of continued growth. It’s this line of thinking that’s prompted some of the best business schools to offer Executive MBA programs that target the largest areas of business worldwide.

Look at a Forbes, Inc. or Fidelity industry ranking, and three segments consistently show up: Healthcare, Energy and Technology. These three industries are experiencing the strongest growth, and so it’s no surprise multiple programs dedicated to these EMBA specializations are now on offer.

In this, the first of three articles, we will look at five of the EMBAs on offer for executives currently in or hoping to move into the healthcare sector.

The Healthcare Industry

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the field of medical and health services is expected to see at least 23 percent growth over the next ten years. Health Carousel’s research has found the healthcare profession is set to become the largest and fastest-growing sector in the US economy. Add to that a steadily aging global population that includes a huge number of “Baby Boomers” who are reaching their senior years, it’s clear to see healthcare will continue to be one of the world’s most significant industries.

University of Toronto – Global Executive MBA for Healthcare and Life Sciences

The newest program dedicated to the over 7 trillion dollar a year sector of Healthcare is the University of Toronto, Rotman’s Global Executive MBA for Healthcare and Life Sciences. The program was announced in the Fall of 2017 and the first cohort begins in October 2018 with enrollment exceeding projections by over 33 percent.

Brian Golden, Vice-Dean, MBA Programs and Academic Director, Global Executive MBA for Healthcare and the Life Sciences emphasizes, “This industry is one of the largest, if not the largest in the world, and yet it is not run exceptionally well anywhere; therefore, we felt it was important to make our program global.

“This industry isn’t just one country focused and neither is our Executive MBA. Participants will study in Toronto as well as in Singapore and in the Silicon Valley; each a place that represents the latest advances in medicine.”

The learning timeline fits easily into a busy executive’s schedule thanks to the program’s flexible planning. Golden points out, “The 18-month schedule has been designed for personal and professional flexibility. The content will be delivered using a blended delivery model that weaves together in-class and on-site learning, with online support. Approximately 75 percent of sessions will be conducted face-to-face in the classroom and in the field.

“Interestingly,” says Golden, “this incoming class is equally split 50 percent women and 50 percent men and the average age, 42 years old, is higher than our other EMBA programs. 34 percent of the cohort already have a medical degree, 10 percent have PHD’s and another 10 percent have a master’s degree. The students are a highly accomplished mix of leaders coming from corporations, hospitals, clinics, research and even government.”

In addition to the University of Toronto, Rotman’s program, there are a number of other Executive MBA offerings with a healthcare focus or elective, including:

University of Tennessee, Knoxville - Haslam College of Business, Executive MBA for Healthcare Leadership

An 11-month program which includes an Organizational Action Project to help you develop healthcare business solutions for an issue specific to your organization, and a Healthcare Policy Immersion in Washington, D.C.

University of Auburn - Physicians Executive Master of Business Administration

Designed for physicians who want to better manage their practices and would like to assume a leadership position in healthcare. The 21-month program combines online lectures, five on-campus residencies, and two travel study experiences.

The Yale School of Management – Executive MBA: Leadership in Healthcare focus

The two-year Yale Executive MBA offers the opportunity to choose from three focus areas which will comprise 25 percent of your studies: Healthcare, Asset Management or Sustainability. The program is offered in a flexible weekend format and uses a Leadership Development Program, raw cases and team projects as part of their curriculum.

Brown University – Executive Master of Healthcare Leadership

An intensive 16-month program designed for healthcare professionals to become visionary leaders. Throughout the Executive Master of Healthcare Leadership (EMHL) program, students carry out an independent project called The Critical Challenge Project where they identify a critical challenge related to healthcare. Throughout EMHL, participants work collaboratively with a variety of people to develop possible solutions to his or her challenge.

Although Andrey Kuropyatnyk started business school with the intention of changing his career to early-stage investor from technology consultant, the EMBA course at University of Chicago Booth School of Business turned him into an entrepreneur.

He co-founded Altris.AI, which uses technology like artificial intelligence to help doctors diagnose retinal diseases – such as Glaucoma – that cause irreversible blindless. Previously only highly-trained specialists could interpret eye scans, but he says Altris.AI “potentially increases the level of confidence in retinal diagnostics by more than 96 percent for all eye care specialists”.

The Ukranian says he wouldn’t be where he is now without the support of his EMBA professors and peers.

An elective course crystallised the concept for his business; classmates who were experts in the field became his co-founders and he won US$10,000 in Booth’s New Venture Challenge business plan competition. He says this has “transformed our idea into the flourishing business it is today”.

While many entrepreneurs enjoy the benefits associated with founding a business at business school — where you can experiment in a risk-free environment with access to a support network — not everyone is convinced.

There’s been bias against business schools over the years from some of the world’s most famous founders, including PayPal’s Peter Thiel, who say courses such as MBAs promote risk-averse thinking. Recent evidence suggests entrepreneurial activity among business students has fallen to its lowest level in nearly a decade, even though it became one of the hottest career paths.

It all begins somewhere

However, some of the most successful startups of recent years trace their roots to business school. The food-ordering delivery service Deliveroo, was founded by Wharton School MBA alumnus William Shu; Sofi, the peer-to-peer lender, was setup by a throng of entrepreneurs who met at Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Such success stories are one reason for the growth in entrepreneurship at business schools, alongside the creation of the internet breaking down barriers previously associated with launching a business.

Waverly Deutsch, Booth professor of entrepreneurship believes business school provides a safe environment in which entrepreneurs can experiment with startup ideas.

She says, “An MBA gives you an incredible network of potential co-founders, employees and mentors who have large networks themselves. Many students get angel investments from their classmates.”

Deutsch, who lectured Kuropyatnyk thinks entrepreneurship can be taught. She says, “Entrepreneurship is fundamentally a process. You’ve to identify an opportunity, validate it, find a market, create a solution and test it. You can teach that process and mentor the skills related to it — negotiation, creativity, product development. All of those things make it easier for someone to succeed.”

She cites Booth’s startup survival rate of about 40 percent as evidence that the approach works – the failure rate of all US companies after five years is higher than 50 percent. But Deutsch cautions, “No process is a guarantee of success”.

Despite the benefits of launching a business while at b-school, entrepreneurial activity appears to be waning. According to figures from the FT, at Stanford last year 36 percent of the MBA cohort founded a firm within three years of graduation – falling to 22 percent this year.

And at Babson College in 2017, more than half of the MBA class started a company by the three-year-mark, which has since fallen to 37 percent this year.

Being efficient with time

Schools say students are hedging their bets rather than cooling on entrepreneurship. Many graduates are launching ventures alongside full-time jobs, so aren’t included in the entrepreneurship figures schools report. And others are creating companies much later in their careers, once they’ve acquired skills in the workforce and paid off some student debt.

Rhonda Shrader, executive director of Berkeley-Haas Entrepreneurship, says, “I absolutely encourage students to get entrepreneurial skills and experience while they’re here and continue on if there’s strong evidence that they’ve found product-market fit. If not, staying plugged in and getting additional experience while paying off debt, banking dollars for the future, is a smarter move.”

The hedging trend is especially true at California’s Haas School of Business, she says because “in the Bay Area the cost of living is nuts”.

She adds, “If you’re not worried about making next month’s rent or student loan payments, you can have a much more honest perspective about your startup. Confirmation bias (seeing what one wants to see) is the biggest mistake that entrepreneurs, both beginning and experienced make.”

Positive attributes

According to Andrew C. Corbett, chair of entrepreneurial studies at Babson College, working on a business while at business school can be attractive to employers. He says, “All companies need to innovate and be entrepreneurial regardless of what stage they are at – their markets and customers’ needs change – so they have to act like an entrepreneur.”

He relates the example of Lubrizol, an US$8 billion Berkshire-Hathaway (Warren Buffett) firm which is one of many companies that “want to hire entrepreneurial grad students because they’ve a need to be innovative and entrepreneurial”, he says.

At Booth, Kuropyatnyk has been running Altris.AI alongside the work he does for his own technology consulting company, while studying the EMBA part-time.

He says, “The biggest challenge as an entrepreneur has been a shift in mindset. In a corporation you’ve the resource and time to strategize and plan in detail, but this isn’t always the case as an entrepreneur. So being smart with your time and network is key.”
