Transforming the World of Business - One Person at a Time
Since 1920, the SMU Cox School of Business has equipped students with the skills, knowledge and experience they need to succeed in business. The small class size creates a collaborative, highly interpersonal environment for graduate business education. Cox's unique approach to a business curriculum integrates classroom learning with real business experience, providing students with the tools and experiences employers value.
American Airlines Global Leadership Program (AAGLP)
The Cox MBA Program not only integrates international perspectives into the classroom, but through the AAGLP it provides a first-hand experience for MBA students. Integrated into the curriculum, this innovative two-week program is designed to provide students with the global experience and insight that all employers value. Small groups of students will focus on different regions of the world, traveling to those areas to meet with local business and government leaders. All first-year students participate in this program with lodging and airfare provided.
Career Enhancements
Outstanding communication and management skills are critical for success in today's business world. The Business Leadership Center (BLC) helps students to build and strengthen interpersonal skills that lead to successful, fulfilling careers. Seminars and workshops are developed and taught by outside consultants who represent advanced leadership training at some of today's most progressive corporations and organizations.
The MBA Career Management Center (CMC) partners with students to develop and implement successful career strategies. This is accomplished by creating and implementing an individualized Career Development Plan tailored to meet each individual students needs. Admitted students have the opportunity to work with CMC staff prior to enrollment to help target their career goals and complete initial research. Alumni also have the ability to work with the CMC team throughout their careers.
Academic Foundation and Expertise
Throughout the Cox MBA program, students will work with professors who influence the direction of business through cutting-edge research on wide ranging topics. First-year students complete core courses, the AAGLP, required career and communication skills seminars, and business elective courses. Students commence their summer internships after they return from the AAGLP travel-abroad experience. Second-year students take courses from the elective concentration curriculum.
MBA students can choose to concentrate their studies in accounting, finance, information technology & operations management, management, marketing, real estate, or strategy & entrepreneurship. Students can further specialize in a variety of areas within the academic concentrations; available specializations include alternative assets, corporate finance, energy finance, and investments in the finance department and marketing consulting or product & brand management in the marketing department. In addition, two joint degree programs are offered: Juris Doctor/MBA (four years) and MA in Arts Administration/MBA (two years).
Unparalleled Business Connections
The Cox School is located in the heart of Dallas, Texas, a world center for commerce and culture. Students reap the benefits of our partnership with the local business community including Fortune 500 headquarters, entrepreneurial ventures, and everything in between in countless ways in and out of the classroom. One such way is by providing opportunities to network with leading business people through the Associate Board Executive Mentor Program. More than 250 senior-level business managers provide MBA students with insightful career advice, invaluable contacts, and an inside track on current business trends.
Scholarships and Financial Support
Merit scholarships are awarded each year based on individual merit and achievement. Recipients are selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement, managerial experience, and managerial potential. Candidates are evaluated and awarded during the admission process and must apply by the Round 3 deadline to receive consideration. There is a special opportunity for a select group of students in each entering class to be named as a Cox Distinguished MBA Scholar and receive a full-tuition scholarship. Candidates must apply for admission by the Round 2 deadline and submit the supplemental Scholars application by the stated deadline (usually early February).
