Full Time MBA Overview

MIT Sloan offers a range of MBA programs, with two full-time MBA variants – the flagship MIT Sloan full-time MBA program, completed over two years, and an immersive, one-year, full-time Sloan Fellows MBA program. The latter is a transformational course for mid-career executives from over 20 nationalities, designed to help students build a global network of colleagues from for-profit and non-profit multinational organizations, entrepreneurial endeavors and governing bodies.

The flagship MIT Sloan full-time MBA is a two-year residential program, which combines classroom discussion led by expert faculty with collaborative, hands-on projects hosted by global organizations. It includes opportunities for specializing through tracks in enterprise management, entrepreneurship and innovation, and finance. Dual-degree options are available through other colleges in the school or relevant partner institutions. These include an MBA/Master of City Planning (MCP), an MBA/Master of Public Policy (MPP) offered in partnership with Harvard University, an MBA/Masters in Public Affairs (MPA), and an MBA/MS Engineering. Additionally, students can add certificates in sustainability or healthcare to customize their study program.

MIT Sloan’s core emphasis is on innovation in practice and research. It is a renowned pioneer in this field, having originated many of today’s most influential theories of finance and management, including the Block-Scholes model, the Solow-Swan model, Theories X and Y, system dynamics, and the binomial options pricing model. It is also committed to lifelong learning; its motto is: "The school will never finish. Nothing is finished, in a world that is moving so rapidly forward."

Despite its obvious commitment to academic rigor, MIT Sloan’s values emphasize the transfer of theoretical learning into practical, action-based learning. Therefore, while the MBA curriculum stresses analytical reasoning and quantitative analysis, courses are taught using the case method, lectures, team projects, and hands-on action learning labs, and involve applying concepts learned in class to real-world settings.

The two-year curriculum is designed to allow for customization, with a core semester of classes where students are divided into small cohorts of 60-70. The program also includes the Sloan innovation period, a week of experiential learning, a month-long independent activities period of hands-on learning away from the campus, punctuated by non-traditional courses and events, as well as a two-week break period to allow for credit-bearing global experiences.

MIT Sloan has one of the largest entering classes of US MBA programs with 406 students recently enrolled, and is becoming less male-dominated with a healthy 40% female student body, and 47% international students. However, it still has a low percentage (10%) of minority students. It is tough to get into, with a 13.8% acceptance rate. Post-graduation, 92% of students are employed within three months, with a median salary of US$125,000, representing an increase of 88%.
