Roy Chason, senior marketing manager at CEIBS, tells us more about the MBA scholarship and why he thinks you should considering studying in Shanghai.

Why are you offering this MBA scholarship?

To encourage high caliber candidates to consider an MBA in Asia and in Shanghai – the world’s new global city.

What made you choose a question about studying in Shanghai as the selection criterion?

To help candidates reflect into the future, and better understand how MBA study in Shanghai can differentiate their experience and business education as compared to programs located in the US or Europe – more traditional regions where MBAs have been popular in the past.

Why should a candidate choose to study in Shanghai?

The beating heart of the Chinese economy, Shanghai is Asia’s emerging finance and commercial hub as well as a new global city. It is the region’s most cosmopolitan city, with a large expat population and an amazing range of culture and entertainment.

The great hockey player Wayne Gretzky once said his secret for success was, “not to go where the puck is, but to go to where the puck is going”. The same goes for business education.  Over the past three decades, business and wealth has been shifting to Asia and China, with the Chinese economy becoming the world’s second largest in 2011, and predicted to overtake the US between 2020 and 2030.

Choosing to study in Shanghai, strategically hedges ones career to take advantage of this shift and of the amazing growth that the region is undergoing.  This is where the business is, this is where one should consider doing their MBA.

What sort of person would enjoy Shanghai? What does it have to offer as a city beyond business?

An individual who is open new experiences, and who enjoys dynamism and change.  One who relishes a global city with a cosmopolitan environment where he or she can meet top professionals literally from all over the world.  Shanghai is a city inspired by the past and looking forward into the future.  It is the gateway into China, yet also plays a gateway to the world both in terms of business and Eastern culture.  The city’s old European style architecture, combined with its futuristic buildings makes the Shanghai experience all the more unique.  It is a non-stop city full of restaurants, theaters, endless shopping possibilities. Shanghai has an international flavor combined with Chinese culture that makes living here a truly unforgettable experience.

What advice would you give to those applying for this MBA scholarship?

Make sure the candidate has familiarized himself with Shanghai and its importance in the global economy, as well as how it relates to his or her future career progress.

What does CEIBS look for in candidates in general?

A strong academic background including a good GMAT score, English language proficiency, a minimum of two years work experience and a good fit with CEIBS’s culture of conscientiousness, innovation, excellence – and an open mind.

What makes the CEIBS MBA program unique? What are the school’s specialty areas?

‘China Depth, Global Breath’ is our clear point of differentiation.  We are the most global business school in China, and out of all top-tier business schools around the world, we have the most in-depth knowledge of what makes the Chinese economy.  It is unlikely that China will not touch the career of any global leader in the next decades.  CEIBS provides the tools and network to enable such leaders to successfully ‘swim’ in this new global reality.  The CEIBS MBA is an 18-month, full time general management MBA with options to specialize in marketing, finance, or entrepreneurship.
