This week the Rice University Education Entrepreneurship Program (REEP) has announced the winner of the MBA Roundtable Innovator Award 2013. The award was given at the MBA Roundtable annual leadership conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

REEP, a program produced by the Jesse H Jones Graduate School of Business, part of Rice University in Houston, Texas, has been recognized for its innovative approach to the MBA curriculum. REEP is a selective program which aims to combine both a top business school education with a K-12 leadership and entrepreneurship syllabus.

The program at the Jones Graduate School of Business is designed to supply campus leaders in K-12 schools and institutions with leadership and management training. REEP enables full-time teachers and administrators to pursue a two-year MBA or a one-year fellowship within the Jones School’s Executive Education training program. The program is having a strong impact on schools in the Houston area and is set to expand at a state and national level this year.

“The potential to impact our communities using our strength in entrepreneurship makes REEP a great fit for the Jones School,” says Bill Glick, dean and professor of management at Jones Graduate School of Business.

Jones Graduate School of Business helping campus leaders become business leaders

Jones Graduate School of Business founded REEP in 2008 partly through a donation from Houston Endowment and has since developed almost 200 current and prospective school leaders from 12 school districts and two charter management companies. REEP helps campus leaders glean an understanding of business frameworks and strategies in order to identify and prioritize areas of improvement to lead to improved student experience and achievement.

MBA Roundtable is a global association of business schools and promotes innovation of the MBA curriculum as well as change within academia as a whole. Judging the awards was a diverse panel made up of representatives from academic institutions and corporations.

“Reflecting the spirit of the MBA Roundtable Innovator Award, REEP is a truly innovative program,” says Brad Adams, one of the award judges. “This mission-driven program that educates and challenges K-12 school leaders is having a direct impact on our K-12 schools while helping MBAs build skills in a critical area lacking today – leadership.”
