Hi! my question please: how
Hi! my question please: how important your use of english language in MBA admissions essay? (when not first language)
Shuzo,
Shuzo,
Thanks for your question.
it is important. Schools want to know that you won't be struggling with the language while trying to learn what is taught. They also want to know that you are fluent enough to contribute to class discussions and team projects. They don't expect you to speak and write like a native speaker, but they definitely want people who can communicate effectively.
Best,
Linda
Thank you Linda.
Thank you Linda.
I hope my speaking level is ok, but must improve my confidence in writing.
Well it sounds like you know
Well it sounds like you know what you need to do. Good luck with it!
Hi Linda! First of all,
Hi Linda! First of all, thanks for taking the time to answer questions on this forum. It's incredibly helpful, and it's much appreciated.
I'm a semi-unconventional profile for B School, so I'm desperately seeking constructive input. I think that my lack of F500/traditionally corporate work experience is the weakest point in my application.
GPA - 3.78 (magna cum laude), in double major, a science + one of the humanities
School - Elite, top 10
Testing- took the GRE, 165 V and Q (90-something percentile, equivalent to 750 GMAT)
Work experience:
1) research assistant at top B School (i.e., Kellogg/Booth/Haas/Sloan equivalent), ghost wrote (and credited for) several case studies used for seminar on inventory management for tech companies, TA for class on supply chain management - 1.5 years
2) worked for grad student I met at said B School (he founded a start up, hired me) - marketing/strategy. 1.5 years
3) Founded online commercial real estate consultancy with friend (13 months, up to present)
Extra curricular:
Mentorship for college bound at risk youth
intern analyst at (not name brand) geopolitical strategy think tank
Extras: have recommendation from the full, endowed prof at the top B School that employed me - VERY kind and enthusiastic letter.
I am considering: Harvard, Wharton, Stanford, MIT, Northwestern, UChicago, Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke. I am an alum from one of those schools, and worked at the other.
I plan to do MBA/MA in international affairs or public policy.
I want to know what chance I might have at a top program (such as the ones listed above), and/or by how much I should alter my goals and list of schools.
JP,
JP,
You're most welcome! Thanks for the post.
I am assuming that your first job was a part-time position and that #2 and #3 were full-time.
Your academics are competitive. Your extra-curriculars are a little weak (based on what you wrote above; details could change that opinion)
You certainly have a chance at the above schools, but as you acknowledge your work is a tad non-traditional And that's a double edged sword. If you can show significant contribution in your full-time positions (increased sales by X% in job #2 for example. Consulted on projects worth $X million in job #3. Advised client to do X which resulted in Y) that would be a big help to you at all these programs.
Also be prepared to explain some of the twists and turns from academia to marketing to real estate to international affairs and global policy. Can you connect the dots? You don't have to do so here, but you need to be prepared to do so in your application or an interview.
Finally, if you are interested in Wharton Lauder, you may want to listen to this podcast interview with the Director of Admissions & External Affairs at Wharton’s Lauder Institute: http://blog.accepted.com/2013/10/24/global-business-leadership-at-wharton-lauder/

Hi Linda -
Hi Linda -
Thanks! That was very helpful. And that first position was full time, not part time, but otherwise everything else was on the nose. I'm looking at Lauder now.
Sounds good. The fact that
Sounds good. The fact that the first position was full-time and not part-time only makes your profile a little stronger.
Best,
Linda
