GMAT sentence correction section. Help!
Submitted by Jesse Lambert on
My grammar is not up to snuff. I feel like I'm stumbling on this part of the test, I'm doing well on quant section (PT around 45), but I'm stuck in the low 30's for verbal. Any books or websites that can help me improve my grammar? Thanks!!
I'm guessing you've already checked out the official stuff available on MBA.com? I know it's obvious but it;s meant to be the best one. then there's all the other ones people always mention, Manhattan, Kaplan, and you can always sign up some classes. What's your budget? are you a non-native speaker or do you need to just touch up your grammer?
yeah, i think that's key - when you're first language you can often just read back the sentences and they feel right or wrong. if you are, maybe you feel like a lighter approach. If so, there's a very cool blog by a man named, Mark Forsyth, in the UK who writes about grammar w/o being too preachy.
I found that the MGMAT Sentence Correction Strategy guide was extremely helpful and thorough. It is really important to take notes when going through SC information since there are so many rules that you have to memorize. Since people remember things visually, it is also important to write examples of incorrect grammar in a different color than examples of correct grammar. It is also really important to have a set strategy. Think of sentence correction as a series of choices. Group the different options into categories (ie has vs have) then eliminate the group with the incorrect choice. Keep eliminating until you only have one left.
