If you do an MBA, does in matter what subjects you graduated in?

I studies science and maths upto school. Then due to some personal issues i had to go the arts route. Right now i am doing a B.A.(will be majoring in political science) I am thinking of doing an MBA after this, probably in finance management. What i want to know is that do companies also take a look at your graduation subjects while hiring? Will people who have science/commerce/engineering degrees and then done an MBA given preference and higher salaries than an arts graduate?

I'd appreciate if i get some insight into this as i am really worried about my future. I opted for arts since i wanted to get into the Indian Civil Services but now I'm having second thoughts about it.. Can someone guide me as to what to do?

Steve - I don't think that will be a major issue, I think admissions criteria mostly centre around your work expereince after your degree. so long as you've worked in a relevant field for a while and got a decent GMAT score your undergraduate degree won't be a massive issue. business schools are always going on about diversity - I think that applies to background as well (though I thjink finance and engineering might be the most common).

but in short, don't worry! just study hard and good luck!!

I agree with the above poster. He/she is right. I mean, you won't be able to get into any engineering management positions and those guys earn a lot, but that goes for most mba students. if you go into the most lucrative fields of finance or managment/strategy consulting your undergrad degree won't count against you.

Just try your best to get onto a good grad scheme when you get out - try doing some internships to give yourself a good chance.

I did my MBA (finance) right out of undergrad (psych) and was able to get 2 internships while in school. One in finance and another working for the president of my school. That in turn got my entry level position doing financial analysis. I did lvl1/2 of the CFA during my 3yrs there and was studying lvl3.

I certainly didn't go to a top5 school, I know many who did and I am in nearly the same spot they are. Top5s are overrated compared to overall drive/intelligence, as with anything else.
