The Imperial Global MBA features all the benefits of an on-campus executive MBA but has the added benefit of eliminating relocation costs and provides students with access to the Imperial MBA in a format that focuses on convenience and state of the art technology. It bridges geographic gulfs to maintain traditional peer-to-peer interaction and project group work through a variety of digital platforms.

Like Imperial’s on-campus program, it allows students to apply what they’ve learnt through the program directly to their workplace. Also, maintaining an income whilst studying greatly reduces the opportunity costs for students.

The class size is small and classmates will “have the opportunity to really get to know one another throughout the program and progress together”, according to Hamza Siddiq, Program Manager at Imperial College Business School.

“The cohort sizes for the Global MBA are relatively small compared to other online programmes meaning that we have much more a community feel to a our programme and that students receive much more individual attention and feedback. Our class sizes are large enough for there to be an impressive spectrum of diversity but at the same time small enough for students to form and meaningful relationships with their colleagues - colleagues who will no doubt become life long friends and consistent advocates of their colleagues growth and development.”

But what are the key differences – aside from the obvious – between an online MBA such as that offered by Imperial and an on-campus program?

“You achieve very similar learning outcomes, with a substantially different learning experience, which encompasses your daily business life in the most natural way.”

The Imperial College Business School online Global MBA is designed as a part-time course for the busy professional which can be accessed from anywhere in the world and “lets you learn on your terms, in your own time” and “bring the Imperial College community to you, wherever you are in the world”.

A tablet loaded with the latest software will allow MBA students to “learn on-the-go” and track progress in real-time. The programme can even be paused to allow for flexibility within the programme.

Modern business is global business

The online Imperial Global MBA program harnesses the power of technology, reflecting the role of technology and communication in modern business – but it also reflects the global nature of modern business.

“A global business outlook is important for any manager, entrepreneur, consultant or any other business person who wants to seize the opportunities available in the global business arena,” says Dr. Marco Mongiello, who will be teaching on the Imperial program.

“An online MBA is the most effective platform for a global scope. Students will share experiences from the widest range of locations, examples, case studies and projects refer to organisations and events from anywhere in the world,” he adds.

Old school, new approach

So does this new breed of online MBA signal a shift away from traditional business practices?

Hamza Siddiq comments, “I feel that the new breed of online MBA signals a change in the needs of MBA students. Whilst people in my age bracket are digital immigrants, we are now educating a new generation of MBA students that are digital natives, who have grown up with technology and expect this ubiquitous use of technology to feature in their post-graduate studies as well.”

“As Schumpeter once said, “innovation brings about a gale of creative destruction” and just as our on-campus programme informed the development of the Global MBA, we expect the Global MBA to inform our on campus teaching as well.”

Dr. Mongiello replies: “We strive to make old and young CEOs, but also CFOs, CIOs, COOs, entrepreneurs and other leaders with our highly selected students and successful alumni.”

Study period at Imperial College London campus

The first cohort of online Global MBA students – the program is launching in early 2015 – will be on campus at  Imperial College London for three weeks during the study period. MBA students can  also choose to take some of their electives at the Imperial College London campus.

The three-week period enables candidates to receive classic face-to-face interaction, experience the social side of campus life and enjoy the plethora of cultural delights in London.

“We pride ourselves on creating virtual and physical environments where students contribute to create knowledge – they do not just receive knowledge from the lecturers,” says Dr Mongiello.

Hamza Siddiq agrees; “the wealth of practical experience that our Global MBA students will bring to the programme will be important. We expect our students to share and debate during face-to-face and online classes and its really this sharing that makes the MBA experience so unique and rewarding.”

“Our global online MBA is setting a completely different paradigm of learning in the virtual world.”
