Is an online EMBA right for you?

It may be the most flexible of all Executive MBA degrees, but the online EMBA isn’t for everyone.

If an online Executive MBA has appeal, before you begin researching different programs on offer, it’s important to determine whether this mode of delivery is actually the most suitable for your learning style.

You could well be an online EMBA program candidate if you...

Have exceptional time management

Preliminary research and discussions with EMBA alumni will have left you in no doubt as to the commitment required of an Executive MBA. By embarking on an EMBA you will be adding a significant workload of study, lectures and group projects to an already full schedule of career commitments and possibly family obligations as well. Choosing to study an Executive MBA online throws another element into the mix as the onus is on you to set time aside for your studies. Allocating this time – and sticking to it – is essential to successfully completing an online EMBA.

Are disciplined to work independently

Many of us work well individually; others work well in a team environment. If you fall into the first category, you’re well suited to the online EMBA. However, while you will be required to work independently, you won’t be completely isolated. Business schools around the globe have established online Executive MBAs in such a way that students are still able to interact with faculty and are involved with their fellow peers at various stages throughout the program. You may also have the opportunity to meet members of your cohort on campus during a designated day.

Aren’t pressed for time

A real attraction of the online EMBA for many professionals is its flexibility with regards to completion dates. While most online EMBA programs will still have a start and end date, this mode of delivery does allow for an extended period of time in which to finish your studies. This enables you to study at your own pace while still being able to successfully complete this prestigious business school degree.

Are unable to attend class

The online EMBA is perhaps best suited for those candidates who don’t have the mobility, flexibility or financial means to attend class in person and on campus. For many professionals this is most likely due to work commitments, particularly entrepreneurs of small and medium-sized businesses who can’t afford time away from their company. However, it could also be for location reasons. If the EMBA program that has the greatest appeal is on another continent to your own, the online offering could be your best – and only – way to achieve this goal.

Are technology savvy

While most of us are able to move (if somewhat slowly) with the times, if you’re still doing your budget with an abacus, and rely on a typewriter for your correspondence, an online EMBA may not be the most suitable method of study for you. While the abacus and typewriter may be a (slight) exaggeration, after all the technology business schools use to deliver their online EMBA programs isn’t too difficult to come to terms with, if the online world isn’t your forte, you may find more time going into deciphering the online component than you can afford and could be better off with an alternative mode of EMBA study.

Can’t take time away from your business

The online Executive MBA holds great appeal for many entrepreneurs as it allows them to study the program without having to take time away from the business. This is particularly important during the formative years of the company, when the small or medium-sized business owner is playing several key operational roles in addition to that of manager, HR team and CEO. Indeed, business schools see many entrepreneurs in their Executive MBA programs, no matter what mode of delivery, indicating the degree has direct relevance to those candidates turning a business idea into reality.

Want to gain an edge

Many middle management professionals often turn to the Executive MBA when they reach a plateau in their career in the hope it will accelerate them up the career ladder. In the past there has been some debate as to whether candidates studying online miss out on key interaction and debate with fellow students. However, the growth of online EMBA programs has put paid to this and the degree has proved to be just as valuable for candidates intent on securing promotion as the more traditional mode of delivery.

Thrive on a challenge

If you’re considering an Executive MBA, you’re obviously an ambitious, determined and motivated individual, set on achieving – and surpassing – your goals. If, in addition to these attributes, you also thrive on a challenge, then look closely at the world of online EMBAs. You may just find it’s exactly what you’re looking for!
