William R Berkley, chairman of the board of overseers and vice chairman of the board of trustees at NYU Stern has donated US$10 million to launch the new MBA scholarship program which will support undergraduates who wish to go on to study a Stern MBA directly after graduation. The scholarship will cover the whole two-years, and includes an annual housing grant of US$18,000 and a US$10,000 yearly stipend for living and other expenses.

Berkley, chairman and chief executive officer of the W R Berkley Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, holds a BSc from NYU and a successive MBA from Harvard Business School. He states; “At 20 years old, I had big ideas and I was incredibly eager to get started. I knew the tools of an MBA would be essential, and I had no time to lose. I had the rare opportunity to pursue my passion at a young age, and we want to bring to Stern the brightest students in the world who are ready to do the same.”

The Stern MBA scholarship is open to university students in their final year of study in any field. The select few will be chosen based on their outstanding academic achievements and the potential to succeed in business and contribute to society.

The Stern MBA scholarship part of a bigger scheme to nurture young talent through funding

According to the dean of NYU Stern, Peter Henry, the university’s aim is to enable those who otherwise would not be able to afford to do a graduate degree. He says; “we have the opportunity to inspire the best young minds around the country and the world to dream big… we want to put the tools of business into the hands of the most promising leaders of tomorrow.”

Berkley’s gift is one of the biggest to be given as part of NYU’s “Momentum Campaign” which aims to raise US$1 billion for scholarships in six years. Two years in, the university has raised US$222 million for the campaign so far.
