The Haas School of Business, part of the University of California, Berkeley, has launched a new institute this week, which will focus on social responsibility in business.

The Institute for Business and Social Impact was created in order to develop solutions to pressing environmental and social problems in the business world today. It will offer a range of courses and programs spanning both the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors, as well as the public sector. Along with this, students will take part in an applied innovation course which involves them in real-life projects within socially responsible companies and NGOs.

A number of already existing programs and centers of research currently being taught at the main Haas School of Business will be moved out to the institute, including the Center for Non-Profit and Public Leadership, the Center for Responsible Business, the Graduate program in Health Management and the student-run Haas Global Social Venture Competition. In addition to the established offerings, the school is also launching a class based upon the impact of women on business and the economy, which will aim to foster the progression of women in corporate management and non-profit leadership, as well as female entrepreneurs.

The dean of Haas School of Business, Rich Lyons, says of the institute’s aims: “The tools of business can and should be applied to bend the many unsustainable paths our world is on… bending these paths will require the combination of skills and mindsets we aim to deliver at Berkeley-Haas. The Institute for Business and Social Impact is the next level of how we develop these path-bending leaders.”
