Carnegie Mellon University alumnus and frequent investor David A Tepper, after whom the Tepper School of Business is named, has given a donation of US$67 million to the university to help launch its new building project.
The gift has enabled the Carnegie Mellon to rehome its Tepper School of Business on a 295,000 sq ft plot as an integral part of what will be known as the ‘David A Tepper Quadrangle’, a social hub and gateway between the main university campus and its other colleges. The facility itself will include bigger classrooms and group spaces, a fitness center, a café and a new welcome center.
This will be the first expansion of Carnegie Mellon’s north campus located along Forbes Avenue in Oakland, Pittsburgh and will be designed to encourage interdisciplinary activities and cross-campus collaboration. This is intended to make it easier for students to make use of the educational tools from separate schools at Carnegie Mellon, meaning that learning is technologically advanced and up-to-date, and students will able to more closely pursue their idiosyncratic interests.
President of Carnegie Mellon University, Subra Suresh, said, “Carnegie Mellon’s culture is historically holistic, integrating research and learning among individual schools and academic disciplines. Our vision for the new Tepper Quadrangle builds on these strengths, creating new interdisciplinary interactions for learning and research and connecting innovation to the business community.”
Tepper’s gift is just part of an investment of US$201 million going towards the Tepper School of Business Quadrangle project. The gift was announced days after Carnegie Mellon launched its Simon Initiative, a scheme to promote the use of the science and technology facilities to improve student education. Over 50 faculty members are involved in the effort which will see students making use of years of the university’s research.

David A Tepper spoke of the school’s initiatives, “CMU has a long history of providing the world with innovative thinkers and the establishment of a true hub for entrepreneurship will help create the next generation of global leaders.”
The businessman has given over US$125 million to the school in the past decade including his previous gift of US$55 million in 2005 which led to the school renaming itself after him. Tepper is currently on the board of trustees and a member of the business board of advisors for the Tepper School of Business.
