The University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School has announced that its next dean will be Doug Shackelford, professor of taxation and associate dean of the MBA@UNC program at Kenan-Flagler.

Filling the role took an international search and the efforts of a search committee led by Susan King, dean of the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication.  Doug Shackelford was then selected by UNC chancellor, Carol Folt, and executive vice chancellor and provost, James W Dean Jr.

The school’s online MBA program, MBA@UNC, was launched in 2011 and Shackelford, associate dean of the program, has been the man behind its success. Having received his PhD from the University of Michigan, Shackelford has worked as a visiting professor in top universities around the world, including Maastricht University in the Netherlands and the UK’s University of Oxford. He also works at the US National Bureau of Economic Research as a research associate in public economics.

James Dean, dean of five years, succeeded by associate dean Doug Shackelford

Shackelford, who has been teaching at Kenan-Flagler since 1998, will replace James Dean who acted as dean for five years before becoming provost of the university in July 2013. The ensuing interim was taken care of by UNC stalwart, John P Evans, who has now stepped in on no less than three occasions such as this.

“There is no greater honor than to guide this great business school, where faculty, staff and alumni care deeply about preparing our students – the next generation of leaders – and serving our alumni and other members of the business community through our research and outreach,” said Doug Shackelford.

Doug Shackelford will be recommended to the UNC Board of Trustees this week and take the position of dean of Kenan-Flagler as of February 1st 2014.
