The LisbonMBA International Overview

The Lisbon MBA is a unique, award-winning, triple-accredited (AMBA, EQUIS, AACSB) MBA program offered in Lisbon, Portugal. It was created in 2007 as a joint venture between MIT Sloan School of Management and Portugal’s two top schools, Católica-Lisbon and Nova School of Business and Economics (SBE), in response to the need for a global MBA program in Portugal, with the first Lisbon MBA International launched in 2009. The Lisbon MBA is offered in both in full (12-month) and part-time (22-month) formats.

In addition to providing a sunny, vibrant, and culturally stimulating study environment, Lisbon is an emerging Atlantic hub, with its exceptional location at the crossroads of European, African, Americas, and Asian cultures. This ideal location provides boundless and exciting opportunities for cross-cultural and business connections, as well as low-cost lodgings for businesses and full-time residential students alike. These factors combine to offer an affordable and dynamic international MBA program, a contributing factor in its award distinctions.

The one-year, full-time, residential Lisbon MBA program provides a boutique MBA experience that is designed to be both immersive and personalized, with a focus on innovative, transformative, hands-on learning. The program aims to enable students to develop the interpersonal, leadership, and soft skills needed, both for their own personal growth and to enhance their opportunities for realizing their full career potential, with a dedicated and personalized career development support service on hand through its career management center.

Classes are taught in English, and are kept small (30-40 students per year) to maximize the learning and create an intimate classroom where students get to interact and learn from the expert faculty, as well as to build strong relationships and networks with their colleagues, MBA staff, and various corporate guests invited to classes.

The program is strong in entrepreneurship and management, and includes an international component that allows students to do up to 25% of their MBA outside of Portugal. The program is structured to prepare students to operate at a global level through a one-month immersion at the MIT Sloan School in Boston, with additional possibilities for partaking in international consulting labs with other MBA students from partner schools in Mexico, Brazil, or China, and a summer project – such as taking on an internship in Portugal or abroad. In addition, students who are interested in starting their own business can take part in an entrepreneurship hub.

On completion of the program, students receive a joint MBA degree from Católica-Lisbon and Nova, and a certificate from MIT Sloan. Graduates are recognized as affiliate alumni of MIT Sloan, with access to MIT Sloan’s extensive alumni community and networking events around the world.

Demographics for the student body vary from year to year, with 38% female and 47% international in the graduating class of 2016. Post-graduation, 90% of students were employed after six months, enjoying a salary bump of 30%.
