Full Time MBA Overview

The University of South Dakota (U South Dakota) is the state’s flagship university. It is in the city of Vermillion, in the southeastern corner of the state and the county seat of Clay County, where it occupies a mix of traditional and modern buildings that lend its campus a “big-time university with a small-college feel”. The university’s Beacom School of Business, created in 1927, is the regional leader in business education, offering a quality, affordable MBA program that is fully accredited by AACSB International.

The MBA program at the Beacom School of Business emphasizes decision-making, problem-solving, analytical and critical thinking skills, evaluation of alternative courses of action, understanding of the impact of the business environment on business decisions, and the application of ethical principles in identifying and resolving business dilemmas.

The course stresses understanding of the role of business in society, and developing leadership ability and social responsibility within it – it is all about adding value to business, and thereby adding value to the world. The MBA faculty challenge students to develop excellent critical thinking skills and apply them to real-world experiences, including opportunities to complete in-depth, hands-on consulting projects.

The Beacom School’s full-time MBA is a two-year course, which can either be pursued as a generalist degree, with a Plan A Thesis route, with core business courses over 27 hours, plus 6 credits with 3 credits for the thesis, and 3 credit hours for business-related supporting courses, or a Plan B (non-thesis) option, with all 6 credit hours as business-related supporting courses. There is also an option to customize the program with a focus on a specific subject area.

Custom specializations include the Business Analytics Specialization, which prepares students to utilize and analyze data to strengthen business decision-making skills; the Health Services Administration Specialization, which prepares students for careers in health administration; the Marketing Specialization, which helps students develop a range of marketing skills across various functions; and an Operations and Supply Chain Management Specialization, which helps students develop operations and supply-chain management skills relevant to all sectors of business.

Other MBA programs offered by the Beacom School include a fast-track BBA/MBA dual-degree program and a full-time dual-degree juris doctor (JD)/MBA, which can be completed over three years. There is also a part-time MBA, an evening/weekend MBA, and an online MBA program. These programs include the same specialization options (with differing credit requirements and timelines) as the full-time MBA program.

The Beacom School of Business’s MBA program has an 88.9% acceptance rate. It has small classes of approximately 13 students, with roughly one-third (32.3%) female students.
