The future of MBA education

Curt Nickisch of the HBR IdeaCast, from Harvard Business Review, recently sat down for a fascinating chat with Scott DeRue, the dean of University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, about ‘how the perceived value of an MBA education is changing in the digital era, and how MBA programs are innovating in response to individual and company demands.’

Imperial College Business School appoints David Brown as Director of Executive Education

Imperial College Business School has announced the appointment of David Brown to the brand new role of Director of Executive Education. Mr Brown joins Imperial from London Business School, where he held the position of Executive Director of Client Solutions, leading the award-winning transformation of custom, open and consortium programs.

Commenting on his appointment Mr Brown said: “I’m excited to be joining Imperial College Business School and look forward to the challenge of raising the bar with our Executive Education offerings. There has already been some very promising results this year, and I believe we can take this forward to even greater success.”

Hong Kong University joins forces with Russian institution to launch EMBA program

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has partnered with the Moscow School of Management (SKOLKOVO) to launch a dual-degree EMBA programme, a response to the development of a Eurasian economy thanks to the “Belt and Road Initiative”.

“The market is eager for high-level business education which ties closely to the area,” says Dr Steven DeKrey, associate dean at the HKUST and chairman of Academic Council at SKOLKOVO .

Courses such as “Doing Business in China and Asia”, “Doing Business in Russia and Commonwealth of Independent States” and “Doing Business in Europe” will be provided to students for them to better understand the business environment and culture of those regions. “Other than Moscow and Hong Kong, five to six international trips will include Belt and Road countries: mainland China, Israel, Kazakhstan and Switzerland among others,” DeKrey says.

HEC’s inaugural big data day hits an upward curve

Almost 200 researchers, professors and students gathered on January 23, 2018, for HEC’s first-ever Big Data Day devoted to promoting the school’s research in Big Data and business analytics. The links between ground-breaking data research, the development of innovative teaching programs, and leading academic research emerged in a day rich in exchange and discovery.

“You know, multidisciplinary research is often a top-down decision,” noted co-organizer Christophe Pérignon, HEC Associate Dean for Research. “But, what we saw today is clear proof that Big Data leads to collaborations amongst researchers across fields and groups (faculty, students and practitioners). We’re hoping it could lead to even more synergies amongst members of the HEC community.”

How to be a game-changing leader

In a new webinar for MIT Sloan Alumni Online, senior lecturer Doug Ready shared five ways leaders can build game-changing organizations. Ready, an expert on organizational effectiveness, is the founder and CEO of the International Consortium for Executive Development Research. He was recently inducted into the Thinkers50 hall of fame.

“Game-changing organizations stand out from the pack and their peer group,” Ready said. “They let people raise their hand and have a point of view to share valuable contributions. They’re not afraid to swim across the stream and experiment and try new things. But they’re not just wildly innovative — they know how to get things done.”
