Ahead of the start of the 2020 MBA application cycle, we spoke to Deirdre M. Kane (pictured above), director of admissions at the University of Georgia, to find out about students can expect from their full-time MBA program and pick up some top tips to help you with your application.
What are the key plans for your MBA program in 2020?
In the last few years, we have significantly expanded our Applied Learning Opportunities and also revamped our Leadership Fellows program.
For 2019-2020, we are launching an emphasis on social innovation, which will focus on B-Corp certification projects for Georgia businesses and organizations, with the aim of helping to build a better (and sustainable) Georgia.
Second, we are adding a marketing capstone course taught by Jim Taylor, Chief Marketing Officer for Arby’s Restaurants.
Thirdly, our global consulting class will pair groups of students with businesses in Cape Town, South Africa. These international opportunities are subsidized by alumni donations to enable any student to participate.
What are the key drivers of these changes?
The college and program want our students to engage in projects locally and globally, to get hands on experience by giving back to the Athens community, develop important problem-solving skills through learning the Lean Six Sigma framework, and gain additional global perspectives through pro bono consulting with international companies.
Outside of the MBA program, is the university making any big changes?
The university continues to invest heavily in experiential learning for its students, public service outreach to Georgia communities, and new product research and development for the United States.
What does your ideal 2020 MBA applicant look like?
Our ideal applicant is a successful professional with a commitment to community service and social impact. We look for students who prefer a collaborative, team-based learning environment.
We offer an intimate, flexible, individualized MBA experience with staff and faculty dedicated to the success of our students.
What are some of the new things you’re looking for in the application?
We continue to look for students who will give as much to this program as they will get out of it - students who are eager to fully engage and take advantage of all that we offer.
Are there any extracurriculars or experiences that would help a 2020 applicant?
We look for candidates with a track record of community service and leadership.
Do you look for a different portfolio in full-time MBA applicants compared to part-time applicants?
Yes. Those populations tend to attract different candidates. Our part-time program is for working professionals looking to advance in their current career path rather than switch careers like the full-time MBA students.
