MBA
The UAlberta MBA is a 20-month, full-time program, which is challenging, focused, and effective. The program is taught in a mixture of lecture, case, and applied learning. The MBA program allows the flexibility to pursue knowledge in a wide range of topics, and the program can be suited to students’ own interests.
In the first year of the MBA program, there is a focus on business fundamentals. The core MBA courses are the building blocks for the second year of study. Courses include economic foundations, financial reporting analysis, managerial finance, data analysis and decision-making, leadership skills, operations management, and managing people.
The program involves a lot of teamwork – over the first year students will work in small groups to develop the functional business knowledge and critical thinking skills. Following the core program, the second year of study involves electives and specializations. This allows for personalization to students’ own interests. The specializations include finance; innovation and entrepreneurship; international business; natural resources, energy, and environment; public policy and management; and sustainability. There are also areas of focus in business analytics, real estate, and supply chain management.
The UAlberta MBA provides opportunities for global exposure and international experience during the program. There are international exchange and summer programs, which vary between four to eight months during term time. There are a number of short-term summer programs also available. Finally, there are international study tours, which are a chance for students to travel and experience the business environment outside of Canada. The trips are two weeks in duration, and involve international company visits, local lectures, and cultural sight visits. There is an international trip to China, a European study tour, and a Japan and Korea study tour, which is open to all students.
The UAlberta MBA attracts strong and mature students who come from diverse backgrounds. There are approximately 80 students accepted each year in the full-time program. Of these, 49% has international experience, with 13 countries represented. The average student has 3.84 years of prior work experience, and 24% are female.
