Based at Michigan State University, the Eli Broad Graduate School of Management is an internationally minded business school with a focus on collaborative thought. Named for Michigan State graduate Eli Broad, who founded KB Home and is CEO of SunAmerica, the school’s vision is to “create and disseminate knowledge through collaborative relationships, while developing transformational leaders who make business happen”. This admirable, human approach has seen the school recognized for high graduate job satisfaction. What’s more, the Broad programme is excellent preparation for the real challenges of the business world, with students also faring well in terms of percentage increase on pre-MBA salary – proof of the monetary value of a collaborative, teamworking attitude.

In order to apply to the Broad full-time MBA programme, candidates must submit academic transcripts, a professional CV highlighting teamwork experience and leadership qualities, GMAT/GRE scores, and two references again focusing on the applicant’s teamwork and leadership experience. Unusually, however, applicants also have to submit both a written and a video essay – the latter is in order to allow the admissions board to evaluate how well each applicant will fit in with the culture and environment of the school, particularly in terms of working alongside fellow students on team projects. In terms of tuition fees, Broad has a three-tier structure, with Michigan residents paying US$30,641 per year, non-Michigan US residents paying US$48,541, and international students paying US$48,691.

Academically, the Broad full-time MBA syllabus combines core academic foundations with personal brand building from the very beginning, helping students to grow their personal sense of business capability alongside their knowledge. Experiential learning is also very much on the agenda, with a range of team-based projects allowing students to hone their practical skills. The case competition is one example of this, in which teams have 24 hours to analyse a case and then present their findings to a panel of industry, alumni and faculty judges. There’s also the opportunity to study abroad for two weeks each May, satisfying the course’s mandatory international business element.

This hands-on, team-based business training is excellent preparation for the modern business world, which is increasingly doing away with the cult of the individual. As a result, Broad full-time MBA graduates are eminently employable, with 85% employed shortly after graduation, at an average base salary of US$101,836 plus an average sign-on bonus of US$18,411. Interestingly, of the 2017 graduating class, a huge proportion - almost 45% – went into supply chain management, bucking the usual US business school trend of entering consulting (which only 13.8% did). This owes a lot to the school’s career programmes and networking opportunities, as almost 80% of post-graduation jobs were arranged through student activities.
