Isenberg School of Management Full-time MBA - UMass Amherst Overview

The Isenberg School of Management is the business school of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Founded in the early 20th century, it has metamorphosed from an agricultural college into one of the best public business schools in the US, with programs that prepare students for a rapidly changing business environment. The school is currently undergoing a 70,000-square-foot expansion to add classrooms, labs, and student-facing spaces with an accordion-shaped innovation hub, set to open in 2019.

The Isenberg MBA program is rigorous and AACSB-accredited, with a strong emphasis on experiential, collaborative learning. It is a two-year program that offers hands-on business experiences as well as flexibility, a collaborative culture, and a tight-knit community in the classroom and beyond. Application requirements include a completed graduate school application form, a personal essay, official university transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a resume and GMAT/GRE scores. With an application acceptance rate of 24.8%, the Isenberg full-time MBA is among the toughest programs to be accepted on. This is in part down to the small class size to applicant ratio, but the popularity of the program can also be explained by Isenberg’s unique approach to tuition fees. Those selected as full-time MBA students are awarded a two-year fellowship that fully funds the degree, including full-tuition, an annual stipend, and healthcare. In return, MBA Fellows gain experience and marketable skills while working on business problems and strategic initiatives for the school itself.

Academically, the first-year curriculum focuses on core business disciplines with thematic strength in business analytics, organizational problem solving, and change management. The second year includes consulting/practicum projects, as well as elective courses that allow students to build a focus in areas such as finance (in areas such as investment management, risk and compliance), marketing (analytics and public policy), healthcare administration, sport management, or entrepreneurship.

Former students heap praise on the Isenberg MBA experience, saying it offers a collegial and supportive environment where teamwork is encouraged, and students can live a high quality of life, and help one another learn and grow. This satisfaction with the program is reflected in Isenberg MBA students’ employment outcomes, with 90% having accepted a job offer within three months of graduation, and earning an average starting salary of US$67,884.
