Jason Garner, Director of Graduate Admissions at American University’s Kogod School of Business speaks about why the MBA and master’s programs at Kogod should be on your radar.
Three important things about Kogod
1) They have a relatively small cohort of about 40 students; students get a lot of personalized attention from the career center, the academic adviser, the faculty and other resources
2) Focus on experiential education: Kogod wants to turn the theories learned in the classroom into the practice students need out in the field. Global Consulting Projects, client visits, and the Leadership Luncheon series allow students to learn how to apply their studies in the real-world post-MBA
3) Career focus: Kogod is focused on outcomes and working with students prior to their arrival. Preparing them for interviews, case-based interview, national conferences and opportunities to get in front of employers
Specialized master’s programs
Kogod’s specialized master’s programs are designed to make students a functional expert in a particular area.
It could be a Master of Science in Finance where you’ll work in the IT lab with organizations like Bloomberg or Reuters Terminals getting hands-on experience you’ll apply in the field.
The MSc in Finance is partnered with the CFA institute and other organizations to ensure you learn the additional skills for you to hit the ground running in your role when you start.
Kogod’s analytics program has a sports analytics track with DC United (the major league soccer team in the DC area). The sustainability management program does a number of site visits with lead certified sustainability organizations in the DC area.
The business school also takes advantage of the government, non-governmental and international organizations available – like the World Bank and IMF so students can apply the things they’ve learned.
Kogod’s marketing program includes agency and industry exposure, allowing students to see both sides.
Why study in DC
An incredible place to study at graduate and master’s level. DC has a lot of private organizations; Amazon will soon be in DC, there’s Marriott, Boeing, and all the big four have a presence.
Government agencies, government consulting, as well as a lot of international and non-governmental organizations are based in the Washington DC area adding to its draw.
Niamh is Deputy Head of Content at QS (TopMBA.com; topuniversities.com), creating and editing content for an international student audience.
